Most people will give you this build:
Shoes of the Magi
Polynomicon
Soul Reaver
Chronos' Pendant
Obsidian Shard
Rod of Tahuti
And tell you to do 2, 3, 2.
I bloody hate this build.
As a master 10 with 2.8k worshippers, I always built him like this:
Demonic Grip
Shoes of the Magi
Hastened Fatalis
Chronos' Pendant
Polynomicon
Rod of Tahuti.
He's very mobile and powerful with this build but many people won't like it because pro players don't build him like an assassin, rather as a mage.

Ao Kuang is not an AS god, he is a high burst mage, like scylla,

Yeah, and Sol is not an AD carry, she's a mage!.. oh... wait...

He's whatever you want him to be.
Assassin Ao works all the time for me, I can't stand him being a mage. That's how I always built him, and I will never change it.
I gave the OP 2 builds, the one most of the players use(burst damage), and my build(high attack speed assassin with plenty of damage to deal). These are 2 different playstyles that work good, it depends on the player.

The difference is that ao kuang has super high scalings and a passive that gives more damage
and Sol Doesnt

I always wonder about piercing, defence debuff items - shouldn't they be bought late game, when the amount of damage (in case of physical also the physical protection itself, which is low at start) makes it worth reducing defence?
Like buying piercing for a 5th lvl hunter would mean you are reducing opponents 20 defence by 33% which leaves him with 13 defence. Which means 88% percent of damage instead of earlier 83% will pass through. Which in case of 100 damage is just that - 5 damage increase. While increasing power by 20 (*0.83) would give you +16.6 damage increase instead.Just curios about demonic grip bought early. Magic defence is higher from the start and hardly increases with progress so the numbers should be different for mages. I'm just to lazy to run them. Have you done them or this is more like a gut feeling & exp setup?
Well, demonic grip allowes me to deal more damage to tankier characters that start defensively but also gives me a good amount of attack speed as well.

Smite is all math in the end. Increasing average damage you increase average winning chances. That's why I agree on importance of attack speed for many gods. I was just curious about math and too lazy to do it myself :)
Aren't all games about math when you dig deep enough inside of them? It's just a matter of if you're willing to get into it

As much as I hate Ao Kuang, this guys build works. Literally his basic attacks will shred then you will insta kill them with 1 ability

Please don't do that second build. That's the type of build you do if you want a handicap...

The only downside deference between the 2 builds is that 2 items are replaced with attack speed. Ao does better with some attack speed so he can shred and still be high in damage

If you really want some attack speed, split the difference and keep the Demonic Grip for some attack speed and replace Hastened Fatalis (which pretty much only gives you attack speed and some movement speed) with Soul Reaver or Obsidian Shard... Demonic Grip isn't terrible on Ao Kuang if you're going to hit your enemy with a few basics before bursting them, but Hastened Fatalis is just completely unnecessary on most gods in the majority of situations.

I absolutely love the mobility fatalis gives me. It makes me nearly unhittable.
If I were to ever switch an attack speed item, it would be Demonic Grip, I only take it for the slight penetration and attack speed

Just very mobile in general, speed and agility while attacking. Spinning around others while attacking them is priceless, they just can't hit me!
